From August 2021 to February 2022 I worked on the mobile version of the Favela-inspired game Cai Cai Balão at The National Filmschool of Denmark.
My main responsibility was handling the audio implementation as well as building an easy-to-use system within Wwise that the sound designers at the Filmschool would be able to use after i left the project.
Cai Cai Balão
Implementation
Here is an example of an event i made for the jungle ambiance in Cai Cai Balão. This was one of the events within the Wwise system i got to design the sound for myself.
Music System
As the game is about free running I wanted the music to reflect the feeling of flowing effortlessly through the Favelas. This is represented by the games flame-parameter - being the time the player has been running uniterrupted.
Each track has a couple of stems getting added based on the level of flame, and at max flame two rhythmic elements are added on top of the track carrying over to the next track as long as the player maintains their flame.
I envisioned the music source as being a physical MP3-player, which made it feel very natural that transitions happened whenever the player bumped into something or changed area, with each area having its own unique playlist.
I also wanted the music system in Cai Cai Balão to reflect the chaotic nature of the music and sampling culture in Brazils Favelas.
I did this by making the transitions only take BPM into account, paying homage to the atonal melodic nature of Baile Funk.
An RTPC is set up to add distortion based on the amount of police chasing you, inspired by the clipped/distorted nature of Baile samples.
